Smoke keeps getting into my bedroom, I’ve taped all around, I think it gets in through the AC. It’s just an exhaust but it must get in there somewhere. This is getting ridiculous, it looks twice as bad as yesterday, the mountain is harder to see . The front door is taped up with gaff tape, it’s a good thing I took a bunch of tape from work over the years. It isn’t working in that room though so it’s getting in. I don’t have a HEPA filter system, I am looking at buying some from Honeywell but of course it’s Sunday so even $100 overnight shipping would be Tuesday, all places like Best Buy... even Macy’s are sold out.....

What about getting a high level ac filter and running your fan full time? Helps here. Doesn’t stop the smoke from coming in but it keeps what does come in from circulating too long. You’re only real hope is a filtered positive pressure system .

Do what HHFP said, get a box fan then cover the suction side with a high quality home HVAC filter. It does wonders for indoor air quality. We did it in our house several times when it was really smokey outside.

The key concept here would be creating a positive pressure environment.
Since this is impossible in almost any home. Attempt to balance interior with exterior temp to lessen exchange rate in most of the house. Attempt to seal off one room with the least amount of potential for smoke intrusion and create as much of a positive pressure inside it as possible.

Yeah I was thinking of buying a filter, I didn’t know they said that but it makes sense. I haven’t ran the AC this morning, I was afraid it was letting it in, I have no idea.

Yeah it’s 80 something today and it gets hotter inside, I have been thinking about that. I might try to get the box fan and filters, stuff is selling out. No HEPA units around. Thanks, I guess I will try it all if I can.

I have a portable AC, I’m not sure how I can put another filter on that, other than tape.

Things are pretty rough here in Richmond (AQI 165) right now, but you’re even higher over there (180+) . I have friends in Orinda - they are 400-650.
I’ve been running my air filter non stop for days but today is the worst. I turned off my A/C since it was creating negative pressure. If you can sweat it out, box fans with hepa filters will help.

It is terrible here on the front range in CO, too. I usually have a view of the mountains, but for the past week, I can see basically to the end of the neighborhood. No rain or weather help in the forecast, either.

Box fans seem to be sold out, I have looked. I taped up my bad window more, I might have found where it can come in by the track, I stuffed foam in and taped it. I have the AC on low to keep the exhaust going out, it’s not cold in here I think it was coming in the exhaust and through the machine. It smells better, we think. I ordered a couple HEPA units but it won’t be there til the 27th. My friend Rudi in in Richmond, he says it’s shitty. My view of Mt.Tam is my gauge, it is harder to see for sure.

My dad is in Boulder, he hasn’t really told me what he’s seeing. I just texted him but he doesn’t really look at it.

Im 10mi from the CO front range. Can’t see it at all today.

Old straps, yes they are 100% gone. I’m going to remove the plastic spacers so my head doesn’t hit the roof with the new cushion.

Hmm yeah, I know my head isn’t that far away, tall people must lay back more.

‘Tis bad. ‘Twas worse this morning. On the plus side, my house isn’t burning down. I’d recommend using the blue masking tape for sealing because it removes easily. Gaffer’s tape? Not so much.

I have the stuff we use on shows, it comes off everything, I use it on truss a lot to mask things that aren’t black. I also have a white vinyl tape we use and it comes off clean from surfaces. We can’t use stuff that hurts things since we often have to go in fancy hotels and do satellite events for the huge shows. Yeah there will never be a fire where we are but we are in the middle of a valley on one side of Tam and it seems to funnel air down from Pt. Reyes and north of us.

It is getting harder to believe, the pandemic wasn’t bad enough, hold by case of beer.

If you’re thinking “I should probably order this” and the price isn’t a major impediment to the rest of your life, I’d suggest doing it while you still can

I just got a couple of a HEPA unit that was on some lists, they won’t be here til the 27th but this probably won’t be over by then and will probably happen again... I think I got the window sealed better, we don’t smell it as much from what we can tell. I have to keep the front door taped, there is a huge draft without it. I got this one for the two rooms, we will just not use the others for now. I also got some filters that were better than the stock ones.

FWIW those Honeywell systems actually work. Noisy but they do help.

My AC is Honeywell, I looked at some independent test lists, these were on all of them and cost less, I needed two . Of course there are very expensive ones that I’m not going to get.

Actually I did have this one, it’s old but it says it isn’t too bad. I have it going now.

A box fan and a 20x20 a/c filter will do wonders. You can get a high performance filter and combine it with an active carbon filter and get good results.

Smokes a bad allergy trigger for me. When it gets like this I retreat to the den with the filter on. Hope the power stays on.

Yeah I have a Honda generator but it would have to be on the deck, then I would have to tape up the sliding door to get the cord inside! It’s all a PITA. I got the propane kit for the Honda so I don’t have to keep fuel around, gasoline has never been in it. I’m from Hawaii, I used to get allergies one day year if I did, it was weird and I don’t know what it was.

The box fans are all sold out and the Amazon ETA is the same as all the other stuff so I got two real HEPA machines coming. My mom is the director of a private school and she got some Amazon gift cards so I got her one too. I think I sealed the window up, seems to be ok. I think I’m going to get some stuff ready for next season if this becomes an annual event. Maybe I will move back home to Hawaii, we get hurricanes but we know what to expect with that. I think I might find a way to put an external filter on the AC intake for the future, I will look at some ideas, time to get clever. I kind of want to get a really nice RV/Bus and be able to bug out!

What do you mean by an external filter on the a/c intake? Do you mean adding a mother filter to the return air duct? If so, you have to be careful about doing that. If you slow down the airflow too much, the a/c won’t have enough airflow for p roper heat exchange over the evaporator coil and it will ice over.

Yeah I didn’t think it would be a good idea, it’s a small size too so I’ m not sure what filter I could have used without cutting one out. I taped up the front door and a couple windows, it seem like it’s ok as long as we don’t do anywhere! I ordered a couple HEPA units, all that stuff is sold out, box fans etc.. too. So it will be three days before those come but for now we are just staying inside. Pinterest has given me some ideas for next year, I assume we are fucked forever, I almost forgot about the pandemic, I have no idea when we can go back to work. Maybe we don’t even stay here, it all depends on that.
